Where to Find the Windmills of Bruges?

The windmills are located along the Kruisvest, a green corridor on Bruges' northeastern ramparts. Starting near the Kruispoort, one of Bruges’ medieval gates, the path is easy to follow and ideal for a leisurely exploration. Here are the windmills in order:


Bonne Chiere

  • Address: Kruisvest, 8000 Brugge, Belgium

  • Highlight: Closest to Kruispoort, this decorative windmill was rebuilt in 1911 after a storm destroyed the original. Though it never functioned as a mill, its charm and scenic location make it a lovely start to your journey.

Sint-Janshuismolen

  • Address: Kruisvest, 8000 Brugge, Belgium

  • Highlight: Built in 1770, this is the only windmill still standing in its original location. It’s operational and open to visitors during the summer, offering a fascinating look at traditional flour milling. Climb to the top for panoramic views!

Nieuwe Papegaai

  • Address: Kruisvest, 8000 Brugge, Belgium

  • Highlight: This brightly painted windmill with its decorative parrot-shaped weathervane was originally an oil mill. Though not accessible inside, it’s a great spot for photos.

Koeleweimolen

  • Address: Kruisvest, 8000 Brugge, Belgium

  • Highlight: Originally built in 1765, this windmill was relocated to Bruges in the 1990s. It’s a picturesque stop near Dampoort, the endpoint of your hike.

The Windmill Hiking Route

Starting Point of the Hike: Kruispoort

Begin your journey at the historic Kruispoort gate, one of Bruges' medieval entry points. From here, follow the green and scenic path along De Vesten, the city’s historic ramparts, where the windmills are located.See the address on Google Maps below.

Route to See the Windmills

  1. Follow the Kruisvest path north along the ramparts to Bonne Chiere, your first windmill.

  2. Continue along the scenic trail to Sint-Janshuismolen, just a short walk away. Take your time exploring this operational mill.

  3. Walk further along the ramparts to reach Nieuwe Papegaai, where you’ll spot its signature red accents and parrot-shaped weathervane.

  4. Finally, head to Koeleweimolen, located near the Dampoort gate, to conclude your hike.

Can you Visit the Windmills for Free?

Yes, you can visit the windmills of Bruges for free, at least from the outside! If you’d like to explore the interiors of the Sint-Janshuismolen windmill, then there is a small admission fee.


Sint-Janshuismolen: Admission is €5 for adults and €4 for students,  €2 for kids above 13 years and free for kids under 13 years. Entry includes access to the interior, where you can explore the wooden machinery and learn about traditional flour milling. Buy your tickets here.
